Physics: Universal Equation Problems?
Two people are fishing from small boats located 30.0m apart. Waves pass through the water and each person's boat bobs up and down 15 times in 1.0 min. At a time when one boat is on a crest, the other one is in a trough, and there is one crest between the two boats. What is the speed of the waves?
Think about it carefully: What information can you derive?
Firstly, if the boat bobs up and down 15 times in 60s, then your frequency:
15/60 s = 0.25 Hz
Next, two boats are located 30m apart and there is 1.5 wavelengths between them, right?
so one wavelength of the water wave:
1/1.5 x 30m = 20m
Finally, use the equation:
v = freq x wavelength
v = 0.25 /s x 20 m = 5 m/s
There you have it!
